A milk substitute that’s dairy and gluten intolerant friendly?
Up to 85% of our customers with lactose or casein intolerance remain symptom free.
What is AlfaLite?
An alternative to dairy milk that looks similar, tastes similar, and cooks and bakes in much the same way. Made in New Zealand, AlfaLite has been enjoyed by New Zealanders for over 34 years. It comes as a convenient powder and is simply mixed with water to make a great-tasting milk substitute you can keep in your fridge or use the powder directly in your tea or coffee and cooking.
Why change to AlfaLite?
Recent studies have raised concerns about the health risks to some people from the proteins, fats, sugars and contaminants in some dairy products, and the inadequacy of whole cow’s milk for infant nutrition.
What’s it made of?
The main ingredient is whey (the most nutritious component of cow’s milk), maltodextrin for complex carbohydrates, and palm oil-based vegetable fat.
Isn’t whey a dairy product too?
Yes it is. Whey is the thin liquid separated from the curds in the process of making cheese. About 80% of the proteins in milk are large caseins, often associated with some of the sideeffects of ordinary cow’s milk. These are taken off with the curds to make the cheese, leaving the remaining 20% of light, easily-digested whey proteins which go into AlfaLite. Consequently, many people who are on “dairy-free” diets CAN enjoy AlfaLite without ill-effects.
Can everyone drink AlfaLite?
Any one who drinks cow’s milk will find AlfaLite provides an excellent, balanced mix of nutrients, well-suited for everyday use. Even people with no health issues can benefit from drinking AlfaLite.
Is it OK to give my children AlfaLite?
It’s very important that babies receive a balanced diet, and any “milk” product is just a part of that mix. AlfaLite by itself is not a complete food for infants ~ it is not an infant formula. Once your child is weaned onto solid foods, AlfaLite is a great milk alternative as part of a balanced diet.
I have a cholesterol problem ~ can I drink AlfaLite?
Absolutely! AlfaLite contains only a trace of cholesterol. Coupled with the health benefits of palm oil, this is a perfect alternative to milk for anyone needing to lower or control cholesterol levels.
I’ve been told I’m lactose-intolerant ~ is AlfaLite OK for me?
Lactose is simply another name for the complex sugar found in cow’s milk. Some people seem to have a reduced ability to digest this, and this can range from “only slightly” intolerant to “highly” intolerant. AlfaLite has only about half the lactose of ordinary dairy milk, so many people diagnosed with lactose-intolerance can enjoy it without ill effects.
Will AlfaLite cure my allergies?
No, it’s not a magic cure. But over the 34 years that AlfaLite has been available, it has been reported that consumers have noted an improvement of the symptoms of many allergies which are now linked with possible intolerance to cow’s milk and dairy products in general. Consumer reports indicate that up to 85% of customers with dairy intolerance remain symptom-free when using AlfaLite.
What’s the fat content?
The fat in AlfaLite comes from vegetable Palm Oil (obtained from sustainable sources). Refined Palm Oil contains roughly equal proportions of unsaturated fatty acids and saturated fatty acids (54% unsaturated, 46% saturated). It has no cholesterol and no trans-fats, is rich in carotenoids and Vitamin E ~ both important anti-oxidants ~ and contains Linoleic Acid (Omega-6). It is also a rich source of tocotrienols, which help to lower “bad” cholesterol.
What about gluten?
AlfaLite is gluten-free. The maltodextrins used in AlfaLite are typically derived from either potato or maize starch, which are gluten-free.
Will I still get enough calcium?
Yes, you will. This is important, as dairy milk has been heavily marketed as an important source of calcium. It’s not often realized that only about 28% of the calcium in cow’s milk can be easily absorbed in the body, because of the proportion of other minerals such as phosphorus. One 200ml glass of AlfaLite’s balanced formula will provide you with 341mg of calcium.
What does it cost?
You’ll be pleasantly surprised! AlfaLite isn’t expensive, typically costing about $2.54 per litre ~ very similar to the price of dairy milk and much cheaper than many other milk alternatives.
What are the AlfaLite products?
A 2kg pack is the most economical way to buy AlfaLite, and makes up to 24 litres, or for convenience you may prefer to use the 800g or 420g pots. AlfaLite Chocolate and AlfaLatte come in 800g and AlfaKreem in 400g pots.
And it comes in powder form?
Carefully formulated to dissolve completely in water, AlfaLite tastes smooth and creamy, very much like ordinary milk. Handy freshtasting milk anywhere, anytime ~ you just need clean water to make it up. And it can be used straight from the container as a whitener in tea or coffee ~ just stir in a teaspoonful when you need it!
How well does it keep?
Sealed in an airtight container, AlfaLite powder keeps for up to 2-3 years. When made up, it should be kept in the fridge like any other milk product and used within 7-10 days.
